For as long as you can remember, you've always been there for Hyunjin, his constant, loyal companion.

You’ve stood by, quietly supporting him while he chases after fleeting crushes and shares stories of unrequited love. Every time he speaks about someone else, you bury your own feelings deeper, convincing yourself that you can handle it, that maybe someday he’ll notice.

But tonight, the weight of your silence becomes unbearable, too much for you to contain.

Hyunjin sits across from you on the couch, animatedly talking about the latest person who’s captured his attention, Lia. His eyes sparkle as he describes her, oblivious to the storm of pain brewing inside you. The hurt in your chest intensifies with each word, and before you can hold back, you let go.

“Why do you always do this?” you blurt out, your voice shaking as you stand abruptly. “You go on and on about these girls when I’ve been right here, right in front of you, this whole time!”

Hyunjin freezes, his smile fading as he stares at you. “What are you talking about?” he asks, his confusion visible.

Tears prick at the corners of your eyes, and you can’t stop now. The words rush out, years of pent-up emotions flooding the space between you two. “I’ve been by your side, caring about you more than you’ll ever know. I’ve been waiting- no, hoping you’d see me the way I see you. But all you ever do is talk about other people.”

The room falls into suffocating silence, the air thick with tension. For a brief moment, you think you see something change in his expression, a flicker of understanding, but then his face hardens, his face contorting with frustration.

“You have no idea,” he murmurs, his voice low and edged with pain. “You don’t know what it’s like to love someone who only sees you as a friend.”

His words cut through you like a blade, sharp and intolerant. He doesn't get it. He doesn't get you. Your heart shatters as the realization sinks in, even now, even after everything you just spilled, he doesn’t understand you.

Anger and heartbreak crash over you in waves, leaving you drowning in the bitter realization that, no matter how much you care, Hyunjin will never understand what it feels like to watch someone love someone else from the sidelines.

You grab your belongings off the couch, leaving him calling out your name.
